One of the things that planner girls/boys (planner people? lol) look forward to every Christmas is the release of the Starbucks Planner. After being disappointed with the 2016 version, I was on the fence whether I would get the 2017 Starbucks Planner but as you can tell, I caved!
This year, Starbucks decided to release 2 designs: the coffee stain design and a blue siren-inspired one. Both designs come in two sizes – the regular and the mini one. Although I like the simple look of the coffee stain design, I had to get the siren-inspired version in the regular size (which is approximately 7.5 x 5.5 inches) because of the beautiful gold foil details and because I love the whole siren myth. (In Greek Mythology, Sirens were originally humans. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, the Greek Goddess Demeter turned them into half bird, half human creatures to help with the search. They are often depicted in artworks as either women who had legs of birds and wings, or birds with large human heads. Not sure why the Starbucks logo features a lady with two tails, but maybe they were inspired by the story of Melusine who was a twin-tailed Siren from the 15th century? Okay, I need to stop geeking out LOL.)
I love that this year’s planner set comes with several add-ons such as the erasable black ink pen, a magnetic bookmark, coffee-themed stickers and a zippered cloth pouch, the design of which matches the cover of the planner. Compared to last year’s set, this one is definitely better value. Of course, it also comes with coupons that you need to cut because it is in the planner itself – unlike the older versions where we’d get tear-off coupons.
The planner is slightly bigger than last year’s version by a few centimeters (a little over 5cm taller and wider), which I didn’t really notice until I stacked the two together. They used good quality cream colored smooth paper similar to the 2016 Starbucks Moleskine version. It is easy to write on, although if you use gel pens or fountain pens, the ink will probably show up on the other side of the paper.
The watercolor artwork on the month separators are beautifully executed – my personal favorites are the artwork on the months of May and December.
The monthly is the typical month-on-two pages grid but this year they decided to make the boxes smaller than last year’s and made it a lot more pleasing to the eye.
The weeklies are similar to last year’s, but as with the monthlies, they added subtle watercolor art to the pages to make it more interesting. They also changed the lined page to a blank one. As someone who does Bullet Journaling, this makes me happy! I find that the horizontal layout really isn’t the best for how I use my planner and having the blank page allows me to draw separate sections (without consideration to the lines haha, I find that challenging because I have slight OCD), while keeping the big ticket items in the horizontal boxes.
Starbucks also decided to remove the dotted notes section in the back and replace it with blank unlined pages with a watercolor art design. I think that would be pretty useful, maybe for phone numbers and other things that you need to note down that do not have a place in the weekly section.
All things considered, the 2017 Starbucks planner is definitely better value than last year’s. With the addition of the pouch and the erasable pen coupled with the beautiful designs, this makes it very attractive for all you planner-users! If you were on the fence about getting the planner, I hope these photos help you in your decision whether to get it or skip it this year. The promo will end on January 8 2017, so you have a little over a month to collect the 18 stickers (9 regular drinks, 9 holiday drinks)! I am quite particular about the layout of my planners, so I totally understand! Let me know if you end up getting one – and if you end up getting the coffee-stained one, I’d love to see more detailed photos!
