[REVIEW] Should You Get the Althea Petal Velvet Powder?

You guys know I love shopping on Althea. Their products are well-priced, their customer service is great and the entire shopping experience is hassle-free – so when they reached out to me a few weeks ago letting me know that they were releasing their first brand-name product – the Althea Petal Velvet Powder – and offered me a chance to try it, I of course said yes. What beauty-addict would say no to that?!?!?!

Althea’s Claim:

“Althea’s very own product range is here, and we’re starting off strong with the Petal Velvet Powder! This debuting beauty is a translucent powder that sets makeup and leaves behind a silky finish to the touch. Infused with oil from Althea seeds, this powder works to keep sebum production at bay without drying out the skin for a radiant, fresh look, all while giving out a gentle scent. Keep your makeup looking great all day or dust some on to stay shine-free!”

The Packaging:

I love the box packaging – it is very true to Althea’s branding and is actually a mini version of their iconic Althea pink box. I feel that for their first salvo, they did such an amazing job with their branding – like anyone who has seen an Althea box will know that this product is from Althea.

As for the actual product packaging, it is a typical screw-cap container. I like that they opted to use a frosted plastic instead of clear plastic because it looks more expensive, and I like that they didn’t use glass – hard plastic just makes it so much easier to travel with. The sifter they used is pretty standard but instead of removing the sticker all the way through, I cut off a small section of it and reattached (a little bit below where it originally was) so I just have a few holes open. This will help minimize the mess loose powders are known for. All in all, not too exciting or innovative, but still cute.

The Product:

Oh my goodness, this translucent powder is so finely milled! It feels velvety and just very luxurious. I really like how it feels on the skin. It doesn’t feel too heavy and blends nicely too – it doesn’t just “sit” on top of the skin – and because it is a translucent powder, it doesn’t change the color of your base. It reminds me a lot of the RCMA No Color Powder but is smoother and has a more luxurious-feel.

The puff that it comes with is very soft and feels nice on the skin. Oh and I really like that it’s cruelty free and is non-comedogenic (meaning will not clog your pores) to boot!

The Scent:

It has a very soft, floral smell – like a floral jasmine tea. To be honest, I thought the smell was kind of “old lady”-like. That bothered me because I have a very sensitive (and picky) nose and no matter how good a product is, if I can’t stand the smell, I will not use it at all. I was so worried about this – thank goodness that when applied, the smell of the powder is very very faint and barely noticeable.

The Price:

This product is currently being sold on Althea for Php210. Quite affordable, but you have to remember that you are only getting 3g of product so if you use powder a lot, this will not last very long. To be honest though, you don’t really need a lot to set your make up – just a little bit in the areas where you get oily will do the trick!

The Test:

I’ve had this product since the 1st of August and have been trying it non-stop. I wanted to test it thoroughly to see if it’s worth getting and you guys – I have been loving it! My skin type is normal-combination and I often get oily around the nose area at the end of the day and since I have been using this, I’ve noticed that I don’t look as shiny or oily, and my skin looked smoother throughout the day. I absolutely hate retouching when I am out and about – I honestly just cannot be bothered – so this is great!

I was even more impressed when I used this on a client for a prenup photoshoot. We were going to be outdoors, under direct heat, with lots of activity (biking and walking around) and I needed something that not only would look nice in photos, but would keep her fresh and shine-free all day. We had the shoot at around 9AM to I think 1PM – and man the sun was out with a vengeance, but my client looked shine free and so so fresh the whole time! After the first session, we went back to the room to do our second look and I had to retouch her concealer a little bit. I was a tad worried about layering the concealer under her eyes because I already powdered under there using the Althea Petal Velvet Powder but lo and behold, this product amazed me yet again because I had zero issues – no cakiness, no unevenness – it was awesome!

The Final Verdict:

If you are on the lookout for a translucent setting powder or if you have oily skin and want to keep the shine at bay or if you are like me and hate retouching throughout the day, definitely give this a shot! I love how it kept my skin looking fresh and gave me an airbrushed finish.

The only caveat, I think, is that it will ship from Korea so if you are thinking of ordering just this product, you will have to pay the international shipping fee (I believe premium shipping is Php250.00). They do offer free shipping for orders over Php999 so maybe ask your friends or family members if they want anything from the site too so you can do a group buy to save on shipping costs.
