Nothing-To-Wear Diaries: Dressy Dinner Edition

posted in: Lifestyle | 0

I received an invitation for a semi-formal event a few days ago, and while I do enjoy the dressing up process, it always stresses me out when it comes to finding the right outfit. I never worry about accessories, shoes or make up but its definitely a challenge to find the perfect outfit to wear. I almost always go for darker colors like black, navy blue, a deep green – sometimes plum or a deep red – but it’s never so easy to find a dress that I like, in the color that I want/need and fits my US 8/10 frame…

…Then I remembered that my sister bought a bunch of dresses from one of Zalora’s pop up shops about a month ago I think. There were two dresses that I really liked – one was a white A-line shift dress with gold details and the other was a black dress with kimono-style sleeves and knit detail. In the end I decided to go for the black because I love that it’s simple, but makes a statement at the same time. It’s black too, which is my favorite color! It fits my frame very well – I am top heavy and i don’t feel constricted in it at all. My favorite feature? Definitely the kimono sleeves.

The quality is good and yes, although Zalora’s prices are higher than other stores, you definitely get value for your money because these dresses are beautiful! The fabrics are good quality, stitching is well done, and the zipper doesn’t give you a hard time. That’s one of my pet peeves with dresses – I hate when the zipper catches just as you are zipping yourself up!

I am going for a black/silver combination, so I chose this pair of silver Aldo heels that I found in my sister’s shoe closet (ha ha) and a black clutch with silver closure that I have had since the early 2000’s! I really enjoy the fact that my sisters and I can share shoes, accessories and clothes – I don’t have to spend so much and just shop their closets when I need something that I don’t already have hihi!

I like to plan my make up in advance as well so I don’t stress about it come D-Day. With the amount of make up I have, this is a must! I am planning to do a simple cut-crease look with a vibrant red lip – which to be honest is one of my go-to looks. Nothing new or overly exciting here ha ha! To achieve this, I plan to use my MAC Strobe Cream for a “glowing from within” look, Make Up Forever’s Mat Velvet foundation which gives great coverage, ZA Cosmetics Perfect Fit Concealer to cover my very dark under eye circles, Ben Nye Banana Powder to set and Too Cool for School’s Mermaid Drops as an all-over finishing powder as my base.

For the cheeks, I am going to use Jazzy Cosmetics Blush in BF-04 as a bronzer/contour powder, a Too Faced blush duo that came with one of their make up sets from a few years ago and Elf Cosmetics Baked Bronzer in Pinktastic as my highlighter.

For the eyes, Maybelline Color Tattoo in the shade 6K227 (the name for their US release is Barely Branded, I think) as my eyeshadow base, matte browns from Tarte’s Tartelette palette for definition, Maybelline Gel Liner and LA Girl Fine Liner for a well defined cat eye line, L’oreal’s Miss Manga mascara and these super comfy generic brand lashes from The Landmark. For the brows, I am going to use Skin Food’s Choco Eyebrow Powder Cake.

I normally don’t do lipliner, but for special events where I want my lipstick to last, I do. For this look, I chose Nichido’s Lip Lipner in Blaze topped off with MAC’s Russian Red and for my nails, Orly’s Siren and Girl Stuff Forever’s Fast Dry Top Coat.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Zalora carried big sizes! I never shop for dresses online because I do not have a model figure and most stores only cater to the more petite ladies and I am happy that Zalora has given us fuller figured women an option. The best part? Zalora has express shipping available to make sure your order gets to you on time! I always have events and things to go to creep up at the last minute so this is a great option to have for those who, like me, always play the game of I-Have-Nothing-To-Wear.

Head on over to Zalora to check out their offerings – I have a few dresses I want to get, but have to whittle down my list ha ha ha! Hopefully, having Zalora as an option will minimize my playing the game of I-Have-Nothing-To-Wear.
