You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t posted since the 8th of July. There’s a good reason for that, I promise. I was busy working with my web designer to redesign my blog! I love that WordPress and other blogging platforms allow you to create and design a blog for free, but I wanted a specific aesthetic for my space.
First thing I needed to decide on was the colour scheme. I don’t have a specific favourite colour – my favourites change regularly. It can be blue this week, green next week, orange the week after that. I had to decide on one specific colour scheme that I’d like and not get tired of after a few weeks. The colour inspiration came to me one day as I was hanging out in my closet and realised that my clothes are all black with some whites thrown in. Eureka! It came to me that the only colours I liked were both on the opposite sides of the spectrum so I asked Lea, my web designer, to create a mock up of what my website would look like if it were predominantly black and white. I have to tell you, as soon as I saw the mock up, I knew I found the best colour scheme for my space! the neutrals make the colours of the images I post pop!
Next, we had to work on the layout. I like the look of a clean and easy to navigate space. I wanted the blog posts to be the main focus, but I also wanted to be able to feature my portfolio. Lea understood what I wanted and she came up with this design where the blog posts are in a 2 x 3 block, with my portfolio at the bottom of the page and a big scrolling banner to feature the most current posts. I like that everything is clean and well laid out on the main page. One of the things I had an issue with with the free WordPress design/template was that it had a tendency to look cluttered. I don’t have to worry about that now 🙂
The most challenging part for me was choosing the right font. I wanted my posts to be easy to read filled with big photos. The first font I chose looked amazing in theory but didn’t translate to my vision. I had to look for an alternative and we finally settled on the one I have on the blog now. I am not 100% sold on this font yet and I am still on the lookout for “the perfect font” but for now, this is okay.
Of course, I had to have my social media banners and we decided to replicate the design I had on my previous website design. It is still there, but it’s down at the bottom so it doesn’t distract from the beautiful and clean design.
Anyway – what do you think of my new blog design? I am so excited in this new chapter of my blog life. I am very very happy with the way my website came out. A couple of friends I showed the initial design to said it’s so me. Let me know what you think – I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback because I really want to make the most out of this space. I know, one of the things I should do is post regularly and although I can’t promise a post every day, I will promise that updates will be made more regularly than my pathetic attempts in the past LOL!
