I first saw the Silisponge on Facebook when a friend shared it on her wall. I didn’t give it much thought then, but then the Silisponge ad started showing up on a few beauty Facebook groups I was in, on my Instagram and on Twitter – it was everywhere. Touted to be a “new revolutionary product” that will minimize foundation wastage because it doesn’t soak the product had all the beauty addicts raring to give it a try. Some friends asked me what I thought of it, if I was going to try it, will it replace the ever beloved beauty sponge and you know, after being inundated by questions like that from my friends, I knew I had to give it a try. I like discovering new make up tools as much as I do make up products anyway so I was certainly up to the task of trying the Silisponge!
I was thinking of purchasing direct from the Molly Cosmetics website, but the Silisponge was always out of stock there. I then saw someone on one of the beauty groups I was in selling this for Php180 each but for preorder, and I figured okay, it will arrive in January and I can try it then – but because I have LOW EQ (LOL), when I saw another seller selling it for Php150 each and she had the product on hand and ready to ship, I had to get a few so I can try it immediately. Now I have about 7 of these Silisponges – more than I know what to do with haha!
Based on the photos I saw online, the ones I have (dupes) and the one being sold on the Molly Cosmetics website were identical. Except for the packaging – the one from Molly Cosmetics had their brand logo on the package and the one I received was in a small zip-lock bag – it looks exactly the same. The “sponge” feels very soft, and it smells nice too – a kind of soft floral smell like lavender or something similar.
Now on to the more important things – how does it perform and will it replace the Beauty Blender/Blending Sponges? The answer is no. To me, it’s just another tool to apply your make up with but it’s not a “one and done” tool. It is something that you can use ALONG with your blending sponge – that is apply the foundation or cream product with the Silisponge so you get every bit of the product on your face, and then blend with the Beauty Blender/blending sponge. On it’s own though, I find that I am not really a fan.
I have had these things for over a month now and while I do like that it allows me to make the most of my base products (foundation, BB/CC Cream, Tinted Moisturizer, etc), I am not a fan of how the product just sits on top of the skin and doesn’t blend at all – I still had to use a damp sponge to blend it nicely into my skin. I tried it with liquid foundation and cream foundation – it did a slightly better job with the cream than liquid but again, nothing amazing. It’s definitely not a Beauty Blender/Blending Sponge competitor – not by a long shot! Their claim is true though – there’s no wastage with this one because it doesn’t absorb any of the product. As far as clean up goes, the Silisponge is also very easy to clean – just put it under running water, add a bit of soap, rinse and you’re done!
And because I hate wasting money, I tried to find another way to use the Silisponge and I found that it works really well as a mixing palette. I like mixing my BB Cream/Tinted Moitsurizer with MAC’s Strobe Cream to get a nice dewy, glowy effect, and you can definitely do that on the sponge and you’ll be able to get the last drop – absolutely no wastage!
To be honest, it was a letdown given the hype the Silisponge received. I was expecting more – hence the fact that I didn’t think twice about buying on preorder and also getting from a seller who had it on hand – but I don’t need more than one or two. I have a few friends who want to try it for themselves so I am giving those to them instead. In fact, my sister already stole one to use in place of bubble wrap to squeeze and press when she feels stressed – it works really well that way, she said LOL!
I guess we can chuck this up to one of those things that the internet made us buy (or in my case, hoard). If you are still interested in trying this, I saw a few stores selling this on Instagram and on Shopee with prices ranging from Php90.00 to Php180.00 – just search Silisponge or Silicone Sponge on Shopee or search using the hashtag #SilispongePH on Instagram so you can see the posts from local sellers. Oh well, on to the next trending beauty item to try! 😛
