“Now that summer is almost here, what are your summer beauty essentials?”
A friend of mine asked me this the other day as we were both griping that summer is starting for us here in the Philippines. When summer comes rolling in, I always make it a point to change my skincare and make up to something more weather appropriate. My thick moisturising cream definitely doesn’t work with the weather and neither does my thick CC cream. I mean, with all this heat, who would want to wear thick and heavy products when you are out in the sun, sweating and getting oily? Ain’t nobody got time for that ha ha ha! So I try to look for alternative products that will help take care of my skin and withstand the insane Manila heat. Here’s what I think are essentials in your summer make up arsenal.
Thick and creamy moisturisers are not the best for the summer heat. Try products that are gel or water based so it doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin. One of my favourites is the Celeteque Hydration Facial Moisturizer. It hydrates my skin without leaving that sticky bleh feel.
Opt for BB Creams/CC Creams/Tinted Moisturizers/Foundations that aren’t too thick. My current favourite is MAC’s Face and Body foundation. It is quite runny and lightweight and it doesn’t feel like you have a lot of gunk on your face. Coverage is also buildable so if you need more coverage in certain areas, you can layer this on.
As with your base, choose a concealer that isn’t too thick and heavy. I use the Maybelline Mineral Power concealer and I really like it because it’s lightweight enough to use during the summer months without compromising the quality – this covers my under eye circles very very well (and if you know me, I have really really dark circles under my eyes — the bane of my existence! Chos, exxage!).
Powder is essential during the summer months if you want your make up to stay in place and not melt within 5 minutes in the summer heat. MAC’s Mineralize Skin Finish is a great powder as it sets your make up without leaving that cakeface feel.
I like wearing cream blush in the summer because I find that it stays on longer than powder. Nars Multiple in Malibu was an old favourite – I should definitely get another one soon!
Bronzer & Highlighter
Summer is all about skin and what better way to amp up your summer look than with bronzers and highlighters? Look extra fresh and glowing by putting bronzer and highlighter in select areas. JLO can’t be the only golden goddess this summer, noh! My favourite bronzer at the moment is Hard Candy’s Baked Bronzer in Tropics. For highlighter, it was love at first swipe with The Balm’s Mary Loumanizer. I ordered this and it should arrive soon and I cannot wait to play with it more.
Hydrating Lip Product
Chapped and dry lips are a no-no. Use a hydrating lip product to ensure your puckers are kiss-ready! Current favourite is the Revlon Lacquer Balm – it gives you the colour you need to look fresh while keeping your lips soft and hydrated.
If you want to wear mascara during the summer months, you should definitely opt for a waterproof formula. You wouldn’t want panda-eyes, would you? One of my all-time favourite mascaras is the Waterproof Avon Supershock Max. It’s inky black and gives just the right amount of volume and length.
Opt for brow mascaras or brow gels in the summer. You’ve got people to see and places to go, you dont have the time for a full-on brow routine! I really like the Etude House’s Color My Brows – the wand is just the right size and the mascara is pretty good too (especially when it starts to dry out ha ha ha, easier to control the product). They have a lot of colours too!
Oh and remember:
– Skip elaborate make up looks and opt to focus on skin.
– SPF is your friend… except in photos. Always use SPF (at least 25) except for when you know you are going to get photographed with flash.
– Waterproof everything! If you like wearing eyeliner, opt for a waterproof formula to make sure that your liner will stay in place the whole day. Same with mascara, lash glue, etc.
– Get your brows shaped and threaded so you don’t have to spend so much time trying to perfect them. You can get away with just minimal fussing if your brows are well maintained to begin with.
– When retouching, make sure you first remove whatever moisture is on there! Always bring blotting sheets or facial tissue, gently tap your face to remove sweat and oils and then retouch. This will help you avoid having cakey make up.
Thank you for your question, S! How about you, do you change up your routine when the seasons change? What are your favourite summer products?
