Althea Red and Black Holiday Beauty Box Review

I love the idea of beauty boxes. It makes you try new products that you probably wouldn’t have purchased yourself, makes you step out of your comfort zone and discover new and amazing beauty products that make you go “how could I have not tried this before?” That’s why when Althea’s main superwoman Tammy asked if there were any bloggers who wanted to try Althea’s holiday beauty boxes, I immediately jumped at the chance – “Me me me”, with matching raising of hands and squirming in my seat like a grade school know-it-all student LOL.

There were three holiday sets, one was a glitter themed box, the other was a skin themed box and the third one was a red and black box. I ended up picking the Red and Black box, and I am so happy I did. The other two boxes – although were amazing and offered great value as well – didn’t really tickle my fancy as much and I am glad the team over at Althea provided us with a couple of options to choose from.

Every month, they come out with 2 to 3 beauty boxes (they sell out really fast though so make sure you follow their social media accounts to be the first to know about their beauty box releases), and you know what the best part is? Unlike many beauty box programs, the Althea Beauty Boxes are NOT subscription-based, meaning you have the choice of whether to get a new box every month or not. If you like it, buy it. If you don’t, then skip it! They offer flexibility, while also giving you that “high” of getting new products at a discounted rate. One of the things that put me off of getting subscription-based beauty boxes is that there are months where you get amazing boxes and then there are months when you get boxes that are just “meh” and with Althea, you don’t have to worry about not liking what you get because you get to choose! Althea Boxes are based on specific themes, and the Trend Boxes are packed with “hot products” based on the biggest Korean beauty trends. Each box contains 6 to 12 full size products and I believe, based on the prices of their past beauty boxes, each box is priced at less than Php1500.

Now on to the good stuff – the products I received! As I said, I picked the Red and Black Holiday Beauty Box and the main reason for doing so is because I wanted to try the Clio Smoky Pro Layering Eye Palette and the Secret Key Miracle Fit Contour Sticks. I’ve also had great experience with the brand Witch’s Pouch (with the exception of their concealer, everything else that I tried from their brand was great) so I was also excited to try their Get It Easy Dual Brow Pencilcara.

Clio Professional Pro Layering Eye Palette
First of all, the packaging is tres chic! It feels very solid and not cheap at all. The cover clicks when you open/close and feels very secure so you don’t have to worry about it accidentally opening up in your bag. I like the size – it’s travel friendly, and it has a mirror too which is very convenient. You get 10 eyeshadows at 1.1g each, with eyeshadow shades that are everyday friendly. I like that they included both cool and warm-toned eyeshadows in the set. There is a bit of fall-down when you apply the eyeshadows (meaning some of the eyeshadow particles fall off of the brush and onto your skin/face), but to be honest I don’t really mind that since I usually apply my eye make up before I finish my base. My favorite shade would have to be “Creep”, which is the first one from the left. It’s a beautiful cool-tone nude color that applies like a dream! The satin shades (Hush, Mystery and Metal) are very pretty and easy to wear, while the mattes are a hit and miss. I like the shades Burn Out, Deep, Blackberry and Midnight, but Black Out (black with glitter) and Smoky (matte black) are both a little bit patchy and needs a bit of work to get even. As a liner though, these two work well. The brush that comes with the palette is fairly decent – I normally throw away brushes that come free with eyeshadow palettes but this one I am definitely keeping.

Secret Key Miracle Fit Contour Sticks in Medium and Dark
The packaging is nothing new or exciting, but that’s okay because the product inside more than makes up for it. The product glides on beautifully, and spreads evenly as well with very minimal effort. The lighter shade is a tad too light for me – to be honest it barely shows up on my skin #Morena), but the dark shade is perfect for subtle everyday contouring. The lighter shade leans a bit on the warmer side of the spectrum, while the darker shade is a proper cool toned brown. As for the size, you get 6.5g, which doesnt seem like a lot especially if you use it for everyday, but you need just a teeny bit of this to get that nice, natural contour. Overall, I am very happy with the product and will definitely repurchase the darker shade once I run out.

Witch’s Poucy Get It Easy Dual Brow Pencilcara in Natural Brown
As mentioned before, I’ve had mostly good experiences with the brand Witch’s Pouch, and this Brow Pencil and Mascara is no exception. The pencil is hard (a lot like the hard brow pencils from Shu Uemura) and I like that because it gives you more control. The formula is not waxy at all – that’s one of my pet peeves with brow pencils, if the pencil is waxy – and blends nicely on to the brow. The brow mascara is awesome – the brush is small for precision application and the formula does not have any glitter particles in it. You can use it on it’s own or as a finishing touch to your #BrowsOnFleek masterpiece LOL!

Y.E.T. Me7 Waterproof Colourful Liner in 07 Black Gang
My favorite type of eyeliner is gel, but I do understand the convenience of using a felt tip/pen eyeliner especially if you like doing your make up on the go. This one from Y.E.T. (Yes Enjoy Time) is easy to use and nicely pigmented. Packaging is very much like other pen liners, but this one sounds like it has a ball inside, making it easier to shake/mix the product. The felt tip is solid, but has a bit of give making it easier to create a solid wing. As for the formula, the shade does come out really black and dries fast.

Mat Fix Matt Lip in 001 Matahari
When I first got this, I thought it would be a lot like the matte liquid lipsticks where you’d apply it like a you would a gloss and then it’ll dry to a full matte. With that in mind, I was wondering why the formula seemed a little too glossy and didn’t seem to dry. Well, I read the description on the box and found out that this was actually a LIP TINT! LOL. The packaging is nice and solid, doesn’t feel cheap, and the color – Matahari – is a beautiful vibrant red. The formula is beautiful – creamy, velvety and very easy to apply. As a lip tint, it’s nice, but beware if you have dry lips because as with most lip tints, this tends to enhance the dry patches. I much prefer using this as a full-on lipstick though because the color is just so so beautiful. This actually ended up being one of my favourites from the set!

Etude House Lovely Cookie Blusher in #6 Grapefruit Jelly
As with most things from Etude House, the packaging is very cute, although not very space friendly LOL. The puff is cute and soft, but not very functional for me since I am not a huge fan of the round/clown/doll-like blush look LOL. The formula is soft and very smooth but I am not sure if the shade is for me. I am generally not a huge fan of coral blushes (on myself), but I love the formula so much so that I have been looking at other shades of the Etude House Lovely Cookie Blushers!

Overall, I would say that the Red and Black Holiday Box was a WIN! I received 7 products that I know I can incorporate into my existing make up kit. I have been using the lip tint for a few weeks now and I love how versatile it is – I can add more if I want an in-your-face red or just a little bit if all I want is a tint. The contour sticks have become a part of my professional kit, and the Pencilcara is now a staple in my on-the-go make up bag. As for the rest of the products? Well, they are sitting nicely in the top drawer of my make up stash, waiting for their chance to shine HAHAHA!
